Event Key
- Art: An event focused on visual arts, with open mic as a secondary priority (which may sometimes even be skipped). Very eclectic. Welcomes beginner poets, performance artists, and even short-fiction writers. Usually free.
- Read: An event with an open mic where you may share your better poetry. Usually includes readings by one or two talented featured poets. Attracts a more traditional or academic crowd. Usually free.
- See: A major event featuring readings by a highly noteworthy author. A book sale and signing is common. Generally requires a ticket purchase.
- Slam: Open mic poets compete for token prizes, often with poems that would seem at home in a stand-up routine or a confessional. Popular with college students. Great fun if you like a bit of excess. A modest cover charge is typical.
- Submit: A deadline for submitting your poetry to a contest, or for possible publication. A small fee is often required.
- Write: A gathering where writers inspire each other, create new works or polish older projects, share them, and provide and gain feedback in a positive and supportive environment. Usually free.
